Jazz Around Minneapolis (JAM) is a two-week summer jazz music camp for MPS and Non-MPS students entering grades 7-12. JAM is led by MPS music educators and includes instruction and mentorship by professional guest jazz artists. Students not only get to play next to professional musicians, they gain knowledge and insight on what a career in the arts looks like.
Jazz performance is the primary focus with students learning and performing in big band and combo settings. Students will also study jazz history, improvisation, stylistically accurate techniques, and various sub-genre styles. Staff and visiting guest artists demonstrate and teach techniques, style, and interpretation.
In addition to rehearsals, significant emphasis is placed on jazz theory and improvisation technique. Further importance is placed on music listening and jazz music’s rich history, as America’s “classical” music. In this setting, students step beyond the confines of schedules and time limitations to participate in a multifaceted jazz education.
