To ensure that students have access to exceptional arts education experiences in any fine arts area, no matter what their school provides, MPS is expanding extended learning opportunities after-school, on the weekends, and during calendared breaks. This is the newest area for MPS, with programs in the pilot stage. Each of these programs is open to any student no matter what school s/he attends:
Summer JAM is a two-week intensive jazz program for students in grades 7-12 taught by MPS music educators plus jazz practitioners from around the country. The program offers instruction in theory and history, small group lessons and ensemble experience for instrumenalists and vocalists.
The John B. Davis Gallery in the new Minneapolis Public Schools central administrative offices in North Minneapolis is the central location for the visual arts components of the Viva City Festival, as well as a place to highlight student and teacher work year-round.
In addition to designing and carrying out its own programs, MPS Arts is working to be a clearinghouse of local art organization student programs. Students, families, and the greater community will be able to use MPS Arts’ website to find engaging arts opportunities around the Twin Cities anytime of year. Additionally, scholarship opportunities and free programs will be made more visible to students.
